If we took a stroll down Metairie Road beginning at the Orleans parish line during the 1940s we'd see:

In 1946 O.J. Andre’s service station was at the corner of Friedriches Avenue. Just steps away at 201 Metairie Road Mrs. Rose Mary Douglas (above) discussed entries in a poster contest at Metairie Grammar School in 1950; teachers today instruct students here at Metairie Grammar Academy for Advanced Studies. Metairie Pharmacy was located at 246. In 1955 ABC Lighting offered residential and commercial fixtures in showrooms at 433. By 1952 an H.G. Hill store was located at 437. Metairie Fabric Shop was at 501. Louis Kohlmeyer operated the Dixie Auto-Lec (514) which sold electrical and automobile supplies as well as bicycles, refrigerators, radios, paint, and hardware. A Metairie Bank branch was at 517. In the 1949 advertisement below Garsaud’s grocery was located at 521. Metairie Beauty School was at 531 (before it moved to the other end of Metairie Road). At one time the Metairie Bar was here. (Courtesy of the Jefferson Parish Yearly Review.)
