Lake Pontchartrain was used to test Higgins boats. Evidence of wartime testing still exists in the high signal signs along Lakeshore drive; mile markers used to gauge speed. During the war the military also called upon small boat operators to “Enlist Now!” at the recruiting station on Baronne Street. (Courtesy Library of Congress).
