Storytellers

One of the glories of life on the lake was the intermingling of generations and the passing down of family legends and lore from the old to the young. Gloria Knower Pohlmann and her brother Edward (Jake) Knower (pictured above) were such story tellers. Dawn Bowers Benfield tells us about the camp (below) that was next door to Camp-a-Nella: “My grandparents owned a camp on Lake Ponchartrain which was called THE OLD GLORY. They sold this camp to the Zanca's sometime in the 40's. It originally was built as a "Play House"…I remember it was a restaurant when I was 4 years old (1931)…Mr. Zanca was one of her customers…I remember there was Mama Lou's, The Happy Landing, The Old Glory and the Ruby owned by the Bourda family, all in the restaurant business at that time”.
