Shushan Airport opened in 1934 on reclaimed land just east of the Industrial Canal. It was the first combined land and seaplane air terminal in the world.  This photograph shows the Shushan Airport administration building shortly after its opening. The façade of this art deco structure would later be covered with “modern” panels. (Courtesy New Orleans Public Library.)
